Cooling & heating systems

By helping to keep car engines cool, the Technyl® Force is a major ally for the vehicle sector. 

When fuel combustion generates power to drive your engine, it also generates heat that increases engine temperature, which is a critical factor affecting both engine efficiency and lifetime. Engines rely on sophisticated cooling systems surrounding its block with coolant to absorb excessive heat and keep temperature within normal operating range.Engineering prowess is required both in the composition and design of these critical parts, as well as the choice of materials that can effectively prevent parts from aging due to the presence of glycol, the main heat transfer medium used in coolant.

Powertrain

The powertrain components transmit engine power and deliver it to the road. To remain competitive, automakers need to engineer powertrain systems that are increasingly economical to manufacture, while offering higher performance, better fuel efficiency, and a longer operating lifetime. 
 
These requirements have led to designs involving higher internal pressure and temperature, greater instantaneous force, and increased complexity in design and mechanical operation. 
 
In the past, most powertrain parts were made of metal. Manufacturing these same parts with engineering plastic materials has proven to be a real breakthrough for the automotive industry, as it reduces weight significantly without sacrificing performance. Halogen-free grades

Automobile manufacturers are under increasing regulatory pressure to reduce vehicle emissions. These regulations strongly affect both new and proposed fuel system solutions, as well manufacturers’ criteria for selecting materials. 
 
Barrier properties 
Thanks to its effective performance as a barrier against different types of fuels, polyamide enables innovative solutions for applications within the fuel system, such as fuel filler ducts, fuel lines, and fuel rails. 
 
Innovation 
The Technyl® polyamide-based solution was developed by Solvay Engineering Plastics for fuel and vapor line applications. Its objective is to provide superior resistance to stress cracking when products are in contact with road-salt environments, offering outstanding mechanical properties at low temperatures, combined with improved fuel barrier properties. 
 
Blow molding solutions

Structural parts

Increasing numbers of automakers are switching to plastics for structural parts to support the industry’s ongoing challenge for lightweighting through metal replacement, where Technyl® materials lead the field.
 
A full range of PA6.6 and PA6 products from the Technyl® and Technyl® Star portfolios is available for developing robust structural parts, such as engine mounts and seat structures. Solvay Engineering Plastics offers customers one-stop service, providing technical support and simulation capabilities, as well as proven expertise in molding technologies. 
 
Technyl® Star™ AFX and SX are high-flow polyamides that are widely used for structural parts requiring extreme stiffness, notably thanks to high reinforcement with up to 60% glass fiber to ensure optimal replacement for metal. These polyamides provide a very good finished surface aspect, along with excellent processability that brings shorter cycle time, lower energy costs, and less clamping force. 
 
Solvay Engineering Plastics is also dedicated to developing new products for metal replacement in structural applications with improved strength, stiffness, and fatigue performance. Our MMI Technyl® Design technology accurately predicts the performance of injection-molded parts using polyamides. Technyl® Star polyamide is particularly well-suited for creating door handles and locks, thanks  to its excellent surface finish and easy paintability, even with very highly reinforced grades. Moreover, Technyl® Star polyamide is versatile enough for processing using injection molding, as well as gas and water injection technologies.
 
Outdoor mirror frames and supports are another good example of applications requiring high stiffness and a top quality surface.
