Advanced solutions for a smarter urban future

The future is smart, data-driven, sustainable and urban. With 55% of the world’s population living in urban areas today, this proportion is expected to rise to 68% by 2050, according to the UN. By integrating big data with new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT), smart cities will provide a wide range of enhanced services to improve urban life and sustainability.

This means smarter urban transport and traffic networks, upgraded water supply and waste management services and more efficient power and heating grids. With an expected growth rate of more than 19% per year, the global smart cities market is estimated to reach $3651 billion USD by 2025, up from $773 billion in 2016. In China, for example, there are plans to build 100 new smart cities by 2020.

Smart parts

A smart city is basically an urban area with a network of interconnected sensors that collect data and use the results for the benefit of its residents. These technologies require, among other things, parts and components made from advanced materials for safe electric flow.

Advanced-engineered Technyl® materials are ideal for use in an array of components along the entire electric-flow chain, from power generation (such as photovoltaic junction boxes), to power distribution (such as circuit breakers) and end use applications (such as electrical units, electric vehicles), home appliances and smart devices. Not only do they provide improved performance on flame retardant and high fluidity, but Technyl® facilitates the path to miniaturization, as well.

Voltage protection requires cutting-edge materials, advanced cost/performance characteristics together with a solid understanding of the electric-flow technology. Solvay’s Technyl® solutions offer the highest specifications of flame retardancy (FR) and productivity, thereby maximizing the safety of key electrical parts at optimized cost.
